We just a broke record for workplace abuse legislation co-sponsors in Massachusetts — and we’re not done

The most legislators we’ve ever signed on in one session is 58. We’re now at 69. And the cosponsor deadline is today at 5pm.

We can’t thank you enough.

Your calls, emails, and visits are making a difference and creating a buzz around the State House. That’s no ordinary accomplishment. And this level of support is a powerful message going into this two-year legislative session that we want protections for targets of workplace abuse — and we won’t back down until we get them.

Here’s who signed onto SD 1355, an act addressing workplace bullying, mobbing, and harassment, without regard to protected class status:

We have until the end of the day to call and email again to put the pressure on legislators to make this bill a priority.

Call and email your state legislators — even if you’ve already done so
Legislators care most about what their own constituents want so they can get re-elected, so we ask you to:
Call your own State Rep AND State Senator. Tell whoever answers the phone “I’m calling to ask _____ to sign onto Senate Docket Number 1355, an act addressing workplace bullying, mobbing, and harassment, without regard to protected class status. The lead sponsor is Senator Paul Feeney.” They may ask you your name and address.
Followup with an email. Tell your legislators why you want them to sign onto Senate Docket Number 1355 and why you want the bill to pass. Include links to these flyers to explain the bill and the full text of the bill:

Ideas for angles to take in your email to make it different than your previous emails:
Addressing workplace bullying will address sexual harassment and #MeToo. Read this article from the LA Times to understand the connection so you can write about it in an email to legislators.
Remind legislators of some of the most severe workplace abuse stories affecting Massachusetts residents:
Focus on abusers and their behavior. Stress the fact that this issue is a bully problem, not due to a flaw in targets. It’s about holding abusers accountable.
Ask others to do the same.
Find out who your State Rep and State Senator are

If you want to do more or are out of state
Send emails to these three different groups (either individually or all at once) with three different messages:

Phone calls
Aside from your own legislators, you can call these two offices in support of the bill, even if you’re out of state. Tell whoever answers the phone “I’m calling to ask ___ to sign onto SD 1355, an act addressing workplace bullying, mobbing, and harassment, without regard to protected class status. The lead sponsor is Senator Paul Feeney.”

Here are the two numbers:
Senate President Karen Spilka, 617-722-1500

Related bills
Consider asking your legislators to sign onto these bills also:

SD 1771, An Act concerning sexual harassment policies in the commonwealth sponsored by Senator Diana DiZoglio. If passed, this bill will prevent the Commonwealth from asking a complainant to not disclose factual information related to claims of a settlement agreement while still protecting the complainant. In other words, the Commonwealth will no longer be able to have employees sign non-disclosure agreements to protect the Commonwealth.

SD 1412, An Act promoting equality and respect in the legislature sponsored by Senator Rebecca Rausch. If passed, this bill will require independent investigations regarding workplace harassment and sexual assault in the Legislature. This change would prevent leaders from protecting their friends during investigations.

SD 1709, Proposal for a legislative amendment to the Constitution to provide resources for education and transportation through an additional tax on incomes in excess of one million dollars sponsored by Senator Jason Lewis. Raise Up Massachusetts, the group that pushed for and won $15 minimum wage and paid FMLA, is pushing for more revenue through an additional tax on income over $1 million.

We thank you again for your persistence on this bill, knowing that bills most often take years to pass.
